Oh no! Another American who makes sense! What am I to do?
I've found another interesting article on the subject of Afghanistan's current legal strife. I particularly like the bit at the end relating to the British response to suttee.
It doesn't take too much effort to come up some basic, broad standards of civilised behaviour and get the UN to paste them up somewhere.
In the appendix to his small book "The Abolition Of Man", C.S. Lewis came up a number of basic ethical rules or laws, and quotations from a broad spectrum of cultures to show their universal nature. I'll go and find them some other time(its currently 01:30 hrs here) but he has quotes for each law from multiple sources including Ancient Babylonian, Egyptian, Chinese,Hindu and Norse; Christian, Hebrew and Islam; and Aboriginal North American and Australian.
